About Us

Blue Dog Kitchen LogoThe Blue Dog Coffeehouse joined the University District neighborhood in August 2004. At the time, we were one of the only coffee shops on the north end of University Way. We started as a simple coffeehouse, slowly expanding our resume with baking our own pastries. Our made-from-scratch approach caught on as we began experimenting with such treats as Green Tea Cookies and Chai Poundcake alongside classics like Blueberry Muffins and Chocolate Chip Cookies.

We stepped it up by adding home-brewed chai to the menu, beginning with the traditional Masala chai, and continuing with one-of-a-kind flavored chais such as Lavender and Ginger Spice. Now, our menu boasts almost 10 different variations of chai which were created on site. At the request of our customers we decided to offer breakfast out of our little, coffeehouse kitchen. In that small space we were able to create the popular egg frittata and some of the fluffiest pancakes in King County.

As word got out on our fantastic breakfast, it became apparent that we needed a larger kitchen to accommodate all of our loyal and ever-hungry customers. In May 2007 we purchased the Brooklyn Grinder and moved a block south to our current location: 5247 University Way NE. The move gave us a full commercial kitchen and an extensive breakfast menu. We expanded into lunch with almost 20 specialty sandwiches, many of which we inherited from the Brooklyn Grinder’s excellent history of sandwich philosophy and some of which we thought up ourselves.

Over the last year, we’ve continued to expand into catering events, offering lunch boxes, adding beer options, expanding our dessert menu, and adding outdoor seating.
