The Blue Dog Coffeehouse joined the University District neighborhood in August 2004. At the time we were one of the only coffee shops on the north end of University Way. We started as a basic coffee shop and slowly evolved over the years. Our first change was baking most of our pastries on site. Our pound cake and cookies are very popular.
Next we added chai to the menu. First was Masala chai followed shortly by lavender and ginger spice chai. We now have almost 10 different variations of chai which were created on site and are unique to the Blue Dog. We had many requests from customers for a hardier breakfast. So we added pancakes and french toast. I believe the Blue Dog has some of the best fluffy pancakes with fresh fruit in Seattle.
Shortly after adding breakfast it was obvious we were outgrowing out current location. In May 2007 we purchased the Brooklyn Grinder and moved about a block south to 5247 University Way NE. The move gave us a full commercial kitchen, a full breakfast menu after adding eggs, and almost 20 specialty sandwiches to our menu.
Our most recent changes were adding catering and lunch boxes, beer sales, and an outdoor seating area on the side of our building.
